The other day, Elliott brought Bear over to me and demanded, "Bear. Tag. Cut off. Scissors." I knew exactly what he meant but was unsure of his understanding of the repercussions of this action. I tried to distract him, but he insisted that Bear's tag be cut off. Why? It is unclear, but his conviction reminded me of when I was younger (not as young as Elliott though) and was convinced that if I cut the tags off my stuffed animals, they would become real. I don't think that this was what Elliott had in mind though because he was quite satisfied after the deed was done, whereas I was deeply, sadly, disappointed.
And before you can even begin to ask, yes, the two Bear clones hiding in my closet met the same fate later that night.

I think that we've all had thoughts like that as a kid. Maybe it's the Velveteen Rabbit stories that make us think that our stuffed animals can be real.
Either that or the tag just itched Elliott -- it's hard to tell the minds of kids some days.
